Cemetery or monumental transcriptions are an important source of birth and death information. Headstones may record details of previously unknown family members as well as for those where evidence already exists or people personally remembered. Sometimes headstones are the only source of information about an individual’s life events. This course discusses the value of these resources and the time period covered. We review what kind of information can be found on headstones and how reliable the information is or isn’t. As part of this course, we will also explore the availability of headstone information, as well as how to access it, both in Ireland and abroad. Furthermore, we plan to delve into a discussion aimed at exploring and revealing certain subtle aspects involved in the interpretation of monumental inscriptions. Several examples will be examined. Students also learn from a case study.
